What role did Salons and women play in the development of the Enlightenment.?

The Salon was a place where Philosophers could argue their views in front of an educated, well heeled audience. Many historians see the Salon as the place where the revolutionary mind in France was developed but the Cafe culture is as or more important. Most importantly it was a place for ideas to be shared and discussed leading to an undercurrent of scientific and philosophical curiosity and innovation.
