Is there a quota of nice times together and then should follow?

No love affairs but I do know men, as friends, for dinner, movies, etc. Seems, though, after a certain quota of enjoyable outings, should naturally follow. For me though, it's not automatic. I'm losing people I thought were friends and not gaining a lover. Can men and women keep a platonic relationship?
